American Airlines deploys new technology to embarrass boarding line cutters

American Airlines has a new tactic to expose boarding line hecklers: the loud whistle.

CNBC Reports The airline is introducing a system that emits two loud beeps when a passenger tries to board the plane before calling his or her boarding group.

As of Wednesday, the new technology was in place at more than 100 airports across the United States following tests at Albuquerque International Sunport, Washington’s Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, and Tucson International Airport.

CNBC reports that other airlines have tried less obvious ways to prevent gate crowding, which could interfere with the boarding process for passengers who pay a premium to be seated early. For example, United texts customers when it’s time to board, provides a boarding countdown clock via its iOS app, and has digital markers that show which boarding group has been called.
