Since launching Threads last year, At users Request from Option to set Their “Following” feed is a default feed. Now, more than a year later, Threads is finally testing users’ ability to do just that.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg Announce On Monday, the social network is now testing the option for users to choose For You, Following, or a custom feed as their default feed.
The launch comes just days after Threads rolled out personalized feeds to allow users to organize feeds around specific topics or specific user profiles. The tool allows Threads to compete with Bluesky, a decentralized social network that allows users to create their own algorithms, feeds, and lists.
Meta is moving quickly to update Threads as many X users move to Bluesky, which has now surpassed 20 million users. Recent changes to the app suggest that Meta is looking to please users by listening to their feedback and giving them what they want in an effort to keep them from moving to Bluesky.
Last week, the platform rolled out changes to show more content from people you follow in the app’s “For You” algorithmic feed. While some people welcomed the change, others responded to it Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri’s announcement post with frustration, stating that they simply wanted the option to set their following feed as the default feed.
After a few days, users now have the option to do so. In his announcement post, Zuckerberg said he was “interested in knowing how and whether people use this.”
It is unclear whether the new feature will be rolled out to everyone or only to specific users. TechCrunch has reached out to Meta for details.
Although Threads has a strong user base of over 275 million monthly active users, it faces increasing competition from Bluesky. Data from market intelligence firm Sameweb shows that Bluesky is catching up with Threads when it comes to daily active users, and that if the social network can maintain its current growth rate, it could eventually catch up with Threads.
