OpenAI Inks agrees to upgrade Anduril’s anti-drone technology

OpenAI plans to collaborate with defense startup Anduril to supply its AI technology to systems used by the US military to counter drone attacks.

The Wall Street Journal Reports Anduril will integrate OpenAI technology into the software that evaluates and tracks drones. Anduril tells the publication that OpenAI models can improve the accuracy and response speed of drones, reducing collateral damage.

The OpenAI technology will not be used with Anduril’s other weapons systems as part of the deal, the companies said.

As the Wall Street Journal notes, the partnership between OpenAI and Anduril is just the latest example of a major tech company embracing the defense sector rather than shunning it. OpenAI previously banned the use of its AI in war, but revised that policy in January, and shortly thereafter signed deals with the Pentagon for cybersecurity work and other projects.

OpenAI has also sought to bring defense leaders into its executive ranks, including former Defense Department official Sasha Baker and National Security Agency chief Paul Nakasone, who sits on OpenAI’s board of directors.
