Web hosting provider WP Engine has filed an injunction in Court in Northern California, asking her to intervene and restore access to… The WordPress.org repository is open source.

With the latest filing, WP Engine seeks to restore the “status quo as it existed prior to September 20, 2024” regarding the company’s access to the open source repo.
“WPE respectfully requests that the court issue a preliminary injunction to restore and maintain the status quo as it existed prior to the above defendants’ wrongful acts. The court’s motion states that a preliminary injunction requires no security because restoring the status quo will not It has no adverse effect on the defendants.
The company added that this protection should also extend to its subsidiaries, partners, employees, users and customers.
Notably, earlier this month Mullenweg added a new checkbox to the WordPress.org contributor login, asking people to verify that they are not associated with the WP engine in any way. At the time, shareholders said they were Forbidden from Slack community to criticize this move.
In a separate announcement attached to the filing, Heather Bruner, CEO of WP Engine, said that until recently, she believed “wordpress.org was associated with and/or owned by the non-profit WordPress Foundation.”
“Automattic strongly denies WP Engine’s allegations — which represent a gross distortion of reality — and reserves all of our rights,” an Automattic spokesperson said. “Automattic is confident in our legal position and will aggressively file a lawsuit against this baseless filing, as well as pursue all remedies against WP Engine.”
