Artiphon’s new Orba instrument can sample sounds directly

Almost two years after the release of Orba 2, Artiphon completes the trilogy. The newly announced Orba 3 finds the Nashville-based startup preparing live samples in its smart portable instrument. The feature arrives via a built-in microphone, which allows users to record their voices, instruments, and other sounds.

All of this can be achieved on-device, meaning there is no need for an external system to load sounds onto the device. Alternatively, you can click the big red sample button on the side, record the audio, and that’s that.

Switching the Orba to one of four different modes—bass, string, drum, and lead—assigns different characteristics to the sound. It’s a clever addition to what was already a very fun little gadget.

“In drum mode, each pad can contain a unique sample, while in chord mode, samples are automatically adjusted to fit the musical chords,” the company explains. “This is made possible thanks to an advanced audio engine that automatically trims, adjusts and enhances audio.”

As with its predecessors, the Orba 3 can be used as a MIDI controller when connected to an external device via USB-C.

The tool is available for $160 Artifon website. Meanwhile, the Orba 2 is still available for $120. Artiphon announced the Chorda last year, which TechCrunch described as a hybrid between the Orba and the company’s first offering, the Instrument 1.
