OpenAI is said to be planning to release its next frontier AI model, codenamed Orion within the company, by December this year. Edge reported on Thursday. Unlike previous releases, the company reportedly plans to release the model gradually to trusted partners before rolling it out more widely through ChatGPT.
An OpenAI spokesperson told TechCrunch that the report is not accurate but did not provide further details.
The Verge writes that Microsoft engineers expect to have access to Orion as early as November, though it’s unclear what OpenAI will eventually call the model. The o1 model series was named “Strawberry” within OpenAI for several months before its release.
There’s a lot riding on the next frontier release of OpenAI. The AI startup just raised $6.6 billion in funding at a $157 billion valuation, and investors expect OpenAI to continue launching increasingly capable models to lead the world of technology.
