Amazon brings AI-powered creative briefs to Prime Video

Instead of searching the Internet for a synopsis of a TV show, which often risks inadvertently revealing key story points, Prime Video’s newest feature aims to save viewers from facing any spoilers.

Amazon Announce Launching Monday, “X-Ray Recaps” is an AI-powered generative feature that creates concise summaries of entire seasons, individual episodes, and even parts of episodes. It is worth noting that the company claims that guardrails have been put in place to ensure that the artificial intelligence does not generate any spoilers, so that you can fully enjoy your favorite series without worrying about stumbling upon unwanted information.

The new feature is an expansion of streamers’ existing X-Ray feature, which displays information when the screen is paused, such as details about the cast and other trivia.

To use Recaps, visit a TV show’s detail page, where the new Rewind icon will allow you to choose from three options: Recap the current episode, Recap the entire season so far, or Recap the previous season.

X-Ray Recaps is currently in beta and will only be available to Fire TV customers in the US to start. At launch, users can access the feature in all Amazon MGM Studios original titles, including “Daisy Jones & the Six,” “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” “The Wheel of Time,” and “The Boys.”

It will be released to additional devices at the end of the year.

As the company explained in its blog post, the feature leverages a set of custom AI models (built using Amazon Bedrock and Amazon SageMaker) to analyze video, subtitles, and dialogue to describe key events, conversations, and other information.

Amazon also notes that the feature is completely customized to the exact moment you’re watching it. So, whether you’re just minutes away from a new episode, midway through a season, or returning to a series you’ve forgotten about, X-Ray Recaps can provide brief snippets of scenes happening in real time.

The Prime Video announcement comes on the heels of rival Google TV releasing AI-generated summaries, a similar tool that creates brief summaries of TV shows and movies.
