President-elect Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that Elon Musk will co-lead the Department of Government Efficiency, whose acronym stands for DOGE, Musk’s favorite cryptocurrency. The CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, xAI, Neuralink, and owner of Expenditures and restructuring of federal agencies.

Notably, DOGE will “provide advice and guidance from outside government,” indicating that it will not be a formal government agency requiring legislative approvals and funding. Instead, DOGE will cooperate with the White House and the Office of Management and Budget, according to press release.

The Trump campaign has indicated that DOGE’s work will end no later than July 4, 2026.

Musk has referenced the creation of a Department of Government Efficiency over the past few months while campaigning for Trump across the country. However, it was not clear what form DOGE would really take, or whether Trump would actually agree to such an offer.

At an October rally in New York, Musk promised “identity.”At least $2 trillion in cutsInside federal agencies if Trump wins. It is not yet clear whether Musk and Ramaswamy will fulfill this promise or not. Musk never made clear which agencies or policies would receive these cuts.

Trump and Musk have become very close in recent months, and their relationship has accelerated since the two hosted an X Spaces chat together in August. During Trump’s 2024 presidential run, Musk donated more than $100 million to a major pro-Trump political action committee, called the US PAC, while also holding rallies for Trump in key swing states. Trump promised Musk the position of DOGE chairman during a September appearance at the Economic Club of New York.
