YouTube is testing a feature that allows select creators to remix songs using artificial intelligence

YouTube last year began allowing select creators in the US to create AI-generated songs with prompts to use vocals from artists such as Charlie Puth, Charli XCX, Demi Lovato, John Legend, Sia, T-Pain and Troye Sivan. Now, the company is adding a feature to its Dream Track suite of tools that allows creators to remix tracks by describing how they want to change the style of the song.

The video streaming platform said it is making select songs available to creators to try out the remix. Creators in the test group can select the “Remaster track” option for a song, and describe how they want to remix it. This will create a 30-second snippet that creators can use in Shorts videos.

“If you want to give a song a different genre or mood, just enter your vision into the ‘Redesign Track’ prompt and you’ll soon have a custom soundtrack that reimagines the music while preserving the essence of the original song’s vocals and lyrics,” to update He reads.

Google notes that these remixed snippets will be credited to the original song through the short video itself and the short audio hub page. Remixes will also have an appropriate tag to indicate that the track has been modified using AI.

YouTube’s Dream Track toolkit, which launched last November, is powered by Deepmind’s Lyria music generation model. At that time, the platform also released a tool that allows users to create a music track simply by humming a tune.

To save itself from the wrath of the music industry, YouTube said last August — before any of these tools were launched — that it planned to compensate artists and rights holders for the use of their work in its AI features. To this end, the company announced a partnership with Universal Music Group (UMG) to develop a structure to pay rights holders.

YouTube isn’t the only company working on providing ways for users to remix audio clips. Former JioSaavn director Gaurav Sharma is building an app called Hook that lets users remix songs that can be used to create short videos.
