Phone scams are nothing new, but with the advent of artificial intelligence, it’s more difficult than ever for people to know if the person they’re talking to is actually who they say they are. But UK mobile network O2 is turning the tables. He created what he called An “AI grandmother” to keep scammers on the line for no good reason.

Daisy, as the bot is called, adopts a “human-like roving chat” to keep the scammers talking, with the express aim of wasting their time on family stories, knitting and divulging completely made-up personal information including banking details.

It was created with the help of a YouTuber, software engineer and famous ‘hustler’ Jim BrowningDaisy combines different AI models to listen and answer calls. But it’s not something you’ll be able to use yourself (as much fun as that would be) – for this exercise, O2 says it has been able to add some of its own phone numbers to lists commonly used by scammers.

Designed to mark International Fraud Awareness WeekThe company says it kept “several scammers on calls for 40 minutes at a time.” After all, the more time scammers spend chatting with Daisy, the less time they spend contacting real people.
