Instagram will soon let you reset your recommendation algorithm

Instagram announced on Tuesday that it is testing users’ ability to reset their recommendations. By resetting your recommendations, you’ll start over and retrain the app’s algorithm around the content you enjoy across the Explore page, main feed, and reels tab.

This feature is geared towards users who feel that their content recommendations no longer meet their interests. For example, you may have liked recipe videos in the past, but are no longer interested in them, yet this type of content may be all you see on your Reels and Explore pages.

The new addition is similar to the feature TikTok rolled out last year that allowed users to reset their For You feeds.

Once you reset your Instagram recommendations, your content recommendations will start to personalize again over time based on the posts and accounts you interact with. If you choose to reset your recommendations, you will have the option to review your following list to unfollow accounts that share content you are no longer interested in.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, posted a video on Instagram pointing out that the new feature is not meant to be used frequently, as it is only designed for cases where you want a complete update.

“I want to be clear, this is a big thing that needs to be done,” Mosseri said. “This will make your Instagram account less interesting at first, because we’ll treat you like we don’t know anything about your interests and it will take some time to get to know them again. So, it’s not something I recommend doing all the time — but if you end up in a place where you don’t feel like… When you’re truly satisfied with your experience, it gives you a way out.

The new feature joins Instagram’s existing tools that allow users to curate their recommendations. Users can select “Interested” or “Not Interested” in the post to indicate how they feel about the content and whether they want more or less of it. They can also hide content containing certain words or phrases using the “Hidden Words” feature on the social media network.

Instagram says that while these tools are designed to help you organize your recommendations on a daily basis, the new option to reset your recommendations is meant to be used when you want to start completely fresh.

Instagram says the new feature will be rolled out globally “soon.”
