May Mobility has been slowly developing its driverless capabilities. This week, the startup launched a small-scale deployment of self-driving shuttles, which will drive themselves along a fixed route without a human safety driver. May will initially deploy one or two self-driving Toyota Sienna minivans to transport employees and “invited guests” across a two-square-mile area of the city.
This is the second city in which May has conducted so-called “driver take-out” operations. In December 2023, the startup began testing driverless driving in a planned community in Sun City, Arizona, where it currently transports passengers for free.
Starting drive-thru operations in a second city in less than a year shows the scalability of its technology, said Edwin Olson, co-founder and CEO of May Mobility. He added that it also expands the capabilities of the driverless system to cope with difficult weather, high speeds and congested traffic.
May Mobility says it hopes to expand driverless testing in 2025 to Peachtree Corners, Georgia, where the startup is currently testing a safe driver.
The startup also plans to bring its self-driving vehicles to the Lyft app in Atlanta next year as part of a multi-year partnership with the ride-hailing company.
