Volkswagen is hiring a former Rivian executive to run its US business

Volkswagen of America has a new CEO: Rivian The chief commercial officer recently left Kjell Gruner.

The appointment comes just one week after Volkswagen’s parent company, Volkswagen Group, formalized a $5.8 billion joint venture with Rivian, which will focus on electric vehicle engineering and software.

While Gruner’s new post isn’t actually related to this new joint venture, it may help that he spent a few years with Rivian. In the coming years, the Volkswagen Group aims to adopt the technology developed by the joint venture in several of its new electric cars. Having someone familiar with Rivian’s technology certainly wouldn’t hurt.

Gruner taking over as CEO of VW USA is also a rebound. He spent nearly a decade as chief marketing officer at Porsche, one of the crown jewels in the Volkswagen Group’s portfolio of automotive brands. (Grüner also got his start in the late 1990s at Porsche.) He then became president and CEO before leaving for Rivian in 2023.
