Uber is expanding its fleet of gig workers and creating a new category: AI annotation and data classification.

The ride-hailing company has begun hiring contractors for a new artificial intelligence and data labeling division called Scaled Solutions. These workers complete projects for Uber’s internal business units But it also serves outside clients including self-driving vehicle company Aurora Innovation and video game developer Niantic, according to reports from Bloomberg.

Bloomberg reported that Uber has begun hiring contractors in countries including the United States, Canada, India and others.

Uber’s move toward data disaggregation comes as that market heats up, thanks to the rise of artificial intelligence. For example, Scale AI is one of the companies in this sector that is seeing increasing demand. The company raised a $1 billion round at a $13.8 billion valuation earlier this year after raising just $600 million in its eight-year history.
