OpenAI is moving into advertising, according to Financial Times. Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar told the newspaper she was considering the advertising business model, with plans to “think” about when and where ads appear. In a later statement, Friar confirmed that she had “no active plans to pursue ads,” but it seemed clear that the idea was on the table. (Financial Times reports highlighted one recent high-profile hire: Shivakumar Venkataraman, formerly of Google.)
The maker of ChatGPT has so far relied on subscriptions to support the development of its generative AI tools. But the costs of making and servicing these models are staggeringly high, and there are only a few billion dollars that investors would be willing to throw into the fire.
However, this move seems uncomfortable for OpenAI founder Sam Altman. Recently Fireside chat at Harvard Business SchoolAfter being asked if the company might embrace ads to expand access options, he said it would be a “last resort… I’m not saying OpenAI would never consider ads, but I don’t like them in general, and I think so.” Ads-plus-AI is an order Uniquely disturbing to me.
