A Chinese-backed hacking group dubbed “Salt Typhoon” may still exist inside the networks of some of America’s largest phone and internet service providers, US government officials said on Tuesday, weeks after the long-running hacking campaign first came to light.
The cybersecurity agency CISA said the affected telecom giants were still trying to oust the hackers, partly because it was unclear what the hackers were trying to achieve.
News first broke in October that Salt Typhoon was present in the networks of AT&T, Verizon, and Lumen (formerly CenturyLink), among others. T-Mobile said it was targeted, but has largely fended off the attackers. It is believed the industry-wide breaches may be China’s attempt at espionage, as hackers have been found targeting the communications of US officials and senior Americans, including presidential candidates, but also accessing wiretap systems that may identify Chinese individuals under US surveillance.
