OpenAI has launched a new subscription plan for ChatGPT, its AI-powered chatbot platform — and it’s very expensive.
Confirming the leaks this morning, OpenAI announced ChatGPT Pro, a new $200-per-month subscription tier that provides unlimited access to all OpenAI models, including the full version of its o1 “inference” model.
“We believe the audience for ChatGPT Pro will be the power users of ChatGPT — those who are already pushing models to the limits of their capabilities in tasks like math, programming, and writing,” Jason Wei, a member of the OpenAI technical team, said during a live-streamed press conference on Thursday.
Unlike most AI systems, O1 and other inference models try to verify their work as they do so. This helps them avoid some of the pitfalls that usually cause models to falter, with the downside being that it often takes longer to come up with solutions. OpenAI released a preview of o1 in September, but this new version is, overall, more performant. Compared to the preview, users can expect a “faster, more powerful, more accurate reasoning model and better programming and math,” an OpenAI spokesperson told TechCrunch.
Additionally, o1 can think about image uploads now (this wasn’t possible during preview), and has been trained to be “more concise in its thinking” to improve response times. According to OpenAI internal testing, o1 reduces “significant errors” on “difficult real-world questions” by 34% compared to the preview version.

“In evaluations conducted by external expert testers, o1 pro mode produces more accurate and comprehensive responses, especially in areas such as data science, programming, and case law analysis,” an OpenAI spokesperson told TechCrunch. “Compared to both o1 and o1-preview, o1 pro mode performs better in challenging machine learning benchmarks across math, science, and programming. In particular, we saw a 75% reduction in errors for easier programming quiz questions that reflect everyday programming queries.”
O1 will soon be available in the OpenAI API as well, with new capabilities including function calling (i.e. the ability to use external tools) and image analysis. OpenAI says it plans to add support for web browsing, file uploading, and more in the coming months.
ChatGPT Pro is OpenAI’s most expensive plan to date – and ChatGPT Plus costs 10 times more. It’s probably a tough sell for all but the most dedicated users, considering Many people I actually think ChatGPT Plus is too expensive.
