I put out Consumer Reports Annual automaker reliability listand first place is relatively unsurprising: Subaru. What may be surprising to some is that Rivian’s electric vehicles are finally dead, especially considering the company topped a different Consumer Reports poll from Earlier this year About the “most popular” car brands.
The consumer outlet said the reliability of Rivian SUVs and pickups is either below or well below the average of other automakers’ vehicles. The company’s electric vehicles have had some company, though, with the Ford F-150 Lightning scoring similarly poor marks, as have the Cadillac Lyriq and the Chevrolet Blazer EV, which actually faltered out of the gate.
Consumer Reports noted that customers are experiencing issues with the electric motors, batteries and charging systems of these electric vehicles. But customers have also encountered problems with advanced technology in the cabin, such as touchscreen-focused infotainment systems. The outlet also said it lacks enough data to evaluate electric cars from startup Lucid Motors, or the likes of Porsche and Polestar.
Overall, Consumer Reports says electric vehicles are improving in reliability. Some cars scored particularly well, including the Ford Mustang Mach-E, while the reliability of the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y was more average. But fully electric cars and hybrid cars still cause their owners more problems than standard hybrid cars or those with internal combustion engines.
