OpenAI says ChatGPT, Sora, and its API-facing developers were all facing a major outage on Wednesday, according to the company’s status page. The company says it has identified a path to recovery and is working to fix the issue as of 4:55 PM PT, but the service remains down at the time of writing. Services have continued for more than two hours so far, and it is not clear what caused the interruption.

The ChatGPT outage comes on the same day that OpenAI launched its integration with Apple in iOS 18.2, which could have caused a flood of traffic to the company’s servers.

Earlier this week, OpenAI also publicly launched Sora. CEO Sam Altman said the startup did not anticipate the amount of attention it would receive, and had to limit the number of users who could sign up. Many users who registered were unable to produce videos on the first day, however, they received a message stating that the OpenAI server had reached maximum capacity.

OpenAI said it was investigating the issue as of 3:17 PM PT.

The outage also comes on the heels of another global service outage for Meta products that occurred earlier on Wednesday. It is unclear whether these outages are related.
