A few months ago, Google’s note-taking app NotebookLM debuted an Audio Overviews feature that creates podcasts with AI-driven virtual hosts based on information you’ve shared with the app.
Now, NotebookLM is rolling out the ability for users to interact with AI podcast hosts.
The idea behind Audio Overviews and its AI hosts is to give users a new way to take in and digest information in documents they’ve uploaded to the app, such as course readings or legal briefs.
With this new feature, you can talk to your AI hosts and ask them for more details or explain a concept to you differently. Google said in a Blog post The experience is like having a personal tutor who listens to you and then responds based on the knowledge from the sources you have provided.
You can use the new feature by first creating a new audio overview, pressing the new “BETA” button, and then pressing Play. From there, you can click Join when you want to ask a question. The host will then call you to talk.
Google notes that this is an experimental feature, and that it only works with the new Voice Overviews feature. Additionally, the company says that hosts may “pause awkwardly before responding,” and since it’s a test feature, they may sometimes respond inaccurately.
Google said people have produced more than 350 audio overviews since the feature launched in September.
NotebookLM is also getting a redesign that reorganizes the app’s tools across three panels: Sources, Chat, and Studio. Additionally, Google is rolling out a premium version of the app for enterprises, called “NotebookLM Plus,” which offers additional benefits.
