Chinese research scientists linked to the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), the military wing of China’s ruling party, have reportedly used “open” meta-AI to develop a tool for defense applications.
according to Reuters Chinese researchers, including two affiliated with the People’s Liberation Army’s R&D group, used Meta’s Llama 2 AI prototype to create a military-focused chatbot. The chatbot, called ChatBIT, is designed to collect and process intelligence, Reuters reports, as well as provide information for operational decision-making.
Meta told Reuters in a statement that the use of the “single and ancient” llama model — the llama is approximately 2 years old — was “unauthorized” and against the Acceptable Use Policy. Reuters says it has been unable to confirm ChatBIT’s capabilities or computing power.
The report provides some of the first evidence that the Chinese military has been trying to leverage open models for defensive purposes — something that is sure to fuel debate about the benefits and risks of open AI.
