pixelmator Announce On Friday it will be acquired by Apple. The photo-editing platform didn’t discuss what life might look like under the company’s umbrella but noted that there will be “no fundamental changes” to the Pixelmator Pro, Pixelmator for iOS, and Photomator apps — at least for now.
If Apple’s acquisition record is any indication, that level of independence could soon change when Pixelmator features are integrated directly into the Photos app. Pixelmator is currently available for iOS, macOS, iPadOS, and VisionOS, but not for the Android ecosystem. I don’t expect that last part to change anytime soon.
The photo editing startup began in 2007, when it was founded in the capital of Lithuania, Vilnius.
“(L)eeking back, it is crazy what a small group of dedicated people have been able to accomplish over the years from Vilnius, Lithuania,” the company noted in its announcement. “Now, we will have the ability to reach a wider audience and make a greater impact on the lives of creatives around the world.”
The deal, which is still subject to regulatory approval, comes as Apple becomes more aggressive about integrating artificial intelligence into its photography applications. The company recently rolled out Clean Up as part of an iOS update. This feature, which removes objects from photos, was considered Apple’s answer to Google’s Magic Eraser.
Apple declined to comment on the news.
