Spotify Wrapped isn’t the only service offering an end-of-year recap these days. In addition to year-end reviews from other broadcasters and social media apps, Google Photos is among the apps that provide users with a look back at key moments throughout the past year. The “2024 Recap” feature, as it is called, offers a collection of memories, insights and images, which can also be enhanced with AI-powered captions.
Google says the latest feature is available to a select group of users in the United States. Users who choose to use AI in photos will be able to add custom captions to their photos, generated by Google’s Gemini AI model. Your captions will highlight the most important moments of your year, like big events, trips, celebrations, and other milestones.
The summary will also include a look at other memories and thoughts designed to be shared outside of the Photos app on other social media platforms. This includes custom metrics on how many photos you’ve taken in the past year, as well as how many videos and how many hours of footage they equate to.
The challenge with annual photo summaries is that we don’t always take photos of the good things we want to remember and experience. Sometimes, we document difficult life moments as well. In my case, Google Photos reminded me that my photos The house burned down In March, for example. I’d rather skip those memories, though Google is right that this was an important moment for me in 2024.
Some people also have to confront other difficult memories – such as those that show them with a loved one who has since died, or happier times with an ex, and more. Unfortunately, artificial intelligence has not yet understood us well enough to know which images we prefer to avoid.
However, if you had a largely positive year, a new Recap can be a fun way to re-share your favorite moments with friends and family.
