The Justice Department has asked a US appeals court to reject an emergency request filed by ByteDance and TikTok that aims to temporarily block the law banning TikTok in the US unless the social network divests of Chinese ownership by January 19.

The Ministry of Justice said that the court should not delay the matter, considering that “China’s continued control over the TikTok application constitutes an ongoing threat to national security.” Reuters Reports.

ByteDance and TikTok filed the request on Monday, asking for a postponement to give the Supreme Court a chance to review the case.

The companies also said the postponement “will give the incoming administration time to determine its position.” TikTok may get a lifeline from President-elect Donald Trump, as he pledged to prevent a ban on the social network.
